LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a rating system devised by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) that evaluates the environmental performance of a building and encourages market transformation towards a more sustainable future. If not planned for carefully, storage can have a big effect on a building’s energy consumption. Luckily, there are many space efficient storage solutions that can help save energy and even reduce a building’s footprint.
Donnegan Systems offers storage solutions that inspire a more responsible use of space and energy, and many of our manufacturers develop their products with the environment in mind. For example, Spacesaver products all contain an average of 75% recycled steel, and Hamilton Casework Solutions has sustainability experts on hand to ensure a safe and environmentally friendly space for every project.

We work with many architects and designers who are attempting to achieve LEED Silver or higher, and our solutions have helped achieve numerous Gold statuses. Here is some more information on how our storage can be applicable to your LEED certification efforts:
Sustainable Sites: By implementing solutions such as high density mobile shelving (featured above) into new construction you can reduce the amount of footprint needed right from the start- therefore minimizing the site disturbance in that area.
Energy and Atmosphere: Our high density mobile solutions come with an automatic aisle light feature that allows the system to be synced with the building’s lighting system, and only use energy for light when the system is in use.
Materials and Resources: All of Spacesaver’s products are made from 75% recycled steel- and steel itself is already the highest recycled material in the world, with 88% of it being reused.
Indoor Environmental Quality: One way that storage can contribute to this category is by providing flexible solutions like in the picture above. The unique trenches designed in the top of the lockers allow for lights to be integrated along the top of the locker, and contributes to the quality of that room environment.
Innovation and Design: The photograph featured above is certainly one of the most innovative uses of high density mobile that we have seen, and this system helped the Seattle Central Library achieve LEED Silver certification. This high density system uses custom designed end-panels and shelves to function as a gift shop when the system is fully opened, and to shut and lock down securely at the end of the day.
